Kali-The Power Of Goddess
Kali is one of the many forms of Shakti. Maha Kaali is the fiercest of all goddesses of Hinduism. The word Kali has its roots in the Sanskrit word "Kaal", which means time. And nothing escapes from time. Goddess Kali is sometimes referred as the goddess of death of ego.
Lean and thin almost like a skeleton, a very dark complexion with the eyes sunk in, the mouth wide open showing the canine teeth curving out and the restless thirsting tongue hanging out, she wore a tiger’s skin and a garland of human skulls. She wielded a sword and a thick and carried a pasa. Kali wears a garland made of 52 skulls and a skirt made of dismembered arms. Kali is depicted standing on the corpse of Lord Shiva (Kali's Husband), who has thrown himself at the feet of Kali in order to placate her thirst for blood.
Kali's blackness symbolizes her all-embracing, comprehensive nature, because black is the color in which all other colors merge; black absorbs and dissolves them. Kali's four arms represent the complete circle of creation and destruction, which is contained within her.
Goddess Kali is known as the "Dark Mother," the Hindu Triple Goddess of creation, protection, and destruction. |
