Nataraja The Lord of Dance Shiva Brass Statue 17"
- The significance of the Nataraja (Nataraj) sculpture is said to be that Shiva is shown as the source of all movement within the cosmos, represented by the arch of flames.
- This is a beautiful representation of the Lord of Dance; Nataraja! Shiva dances within a beautiful arch with
flames on perimeter, beautiful carvings that look like wandering vines in the middle and wave designs on the
inner portion. On the top of the arch sits a Mahakala looming over Shiva. Mahakala is known as great time.
Mahakala is very powerful because time devours everything in the end.
- Dimensions : Height-17 inches, Width-15 inches, Depth-5 inches
- Clean it with soft cloth/soft brush.
Nataraja wears a snake wrapped around his arm symbolizing the power he has over the most deadly of creatures. Snakes are also used to symbolize the Hindu dogma of eincarnation. Their natural process of molting or shedding their skin is symbolic of the human souls transmigration of bodies from one life to another. The purpose of the dance is to release men from illusion of the idea of the "self" and of the physical world. The cosmic dance was performed in Chidambaram in South India, called the center of the universe by some Hindus. The gestures of the dance represent Shiva's five ctivities, creation (symbolized by the drum), protection (by the "fear not" hand gesture), destruction (by the fire), embodiment (by the foot planted on the dwarf), and release (by the foot held aloft). Looming above him is Mahakala or "great time" that devours all. |
