Shiva is known by many names like, Shankar the Giver of Joy; Shambhu, the Abode of Joy. As Maheshwar, he is the Divine Lord, the source of knowledge. In him are co-reside the three energies from which knowledge flows, the power of understanding(Jnana), the will (Iccha) and the action (Kriya). Shiva is Mahakala, it means not only the God of Death but also the God of Time. Before anything could come to exist, time has to be present. Shiva release the being from death, and leads the soul to immortality and enlightenment. Shiva is the dissolving force in life. Shiva dissolves in order to create, since death is the medium for rebirth into a new life. So the opposites of life and death and creation and destruction both reside in his character. Nataraja or Nataraj, the dancing form of Lord Shiva means the King of Dancers and symbolizes a marvelously unified and dynamic creation involving the cosmos ,expressing the rhythm and harmony of life.
Shiva is the creator of dance and of the first 16 rhythmic syllables ever uttered, from which the Sanskrit language was born. His dance of anger is called the Rudra Tandava and his dance of joy, the Ananda Tandava. This cosmic dance of Shiva is called 'Anandatandava,' meaning the Dance of Bliss, and symbolizes the cosmic cycles of creation and destruction, as well as the daily rhythm of birth and death. The dance is a pictorial allegory of the five principle manifestations of eternal energy — creation, destruction, preservation, salvation, and illusion. According to Coomerswamy, the dance of Shiva also represents his five activities: 'Shrishti' (creation, evolution); 'Sthiti' (preservation, support); 'Samhara' (destruction, evolution); 'Tirobhava' (illusion); and 'Anugraha' (release, emancipation, grace). |
